Our Services

N R Brown Farriers offer a reliable, efficient and friendly professional service to care for your equine’s feet. We are experienced in caring for horses, ponies and donkeys, shod and unshod, worked and retired.

The Farrier : Client Relationship is incredibly important for us to care for your horse’s feet to the very best of our ability. A breakdown of our expectations from you, the client, and what you may expect from us is provided in further detail.

The Forge is based just north of Abergavenny on the A465 to Hereford. We maintain a relatively small area as this helps to ensure we can provide a good, prompt service to our clients. Our current area stretches from Allensmore to the north to Goytre to the south and from Crickhowell to the west and to Trellech to the east.  We do travel outside these areas but travel will be quoted for on an individual basis.

Our clients currently participate in racing, three day eventing, showjumping, dressage, showing, Pony Club and Riding Club activities, hunting, endurance, driving, mounted games and polocrosse. We care for broodmares and youngstock, companion and leisure horses.

In 2005 we became farriers to H Westons & Son, makers of traditional English cider. Weston’s are outside our normal area but, at the time, we did not shoe any shires and we felt that this was a great opportunity to provide the apprentices with valuable experience and it is always nice to shoe such friendly giants! The resident shires at Weston’s regularly give dray rides down to the village and back and are a valuable part of the Visitor’s Centre.

Veterinary Referral

For a long time Nigel has worked closely with the local veterinary surgeons providing remedial and therapeutic shoeing for specific problems. A good working relationship between a veterinary surgeon and farrier, based on mutual respect and trust, is essential and extremely beneficial to the well-being of the horse – by working together we can ensure the most successful outcome. We are delighted to say we now work on a regular basis with B&W Equine, Abbey Vets, Three Counties Equine Hospital and Belmont Vets.

Freelance Farriers

To ensure continuity of service we may, from time to time, use freelance farriers. This may be due to illness or injury or during particularly busy times. The two freelance farriers we currently use are known to our clients as they were trained by Nigel! The freelance farrier will always be sent out with a regular member of the N R Brown Farriers team.

Hoof Care Products

We are stockists of a small selection of hoof care products. From time to time it may be necessary to support the overall health of your horses feet by way of a topical application and/or dietary supplementation. This may be due to poor or slow horn growth, infection such as thrush or white line disease or for general maintenance of a healthy hoof. We will discuss this with you should the situation arise, however, please feel free to ask about the range of products available.

Should you be interested in utilising the services of N R Brown Farriers please do get in touch for an informal chat to discuss your requirements. Nigel may be contacted on his mobile on 07970 786860 or email.
